InnoWATCCH – Innovative Water Retention for Climate Change Mitigation, Sustainable Agriculture and Flood Protection

The InnoWATCCH project addresses the growing impacts of climate change on water resources in the Danube River Basin, including decreasing groundwater recharge, water scarcity, and increasing risks of droughts and floods. Changing precipitation patterns, higher evapotranspiration and drier soils threaten the water supply of millions of people, particularly in the middle and lower Danube regions. The project focuses on innovative water retention solutions that support climate change mitigation, sustainable agriculture and improved flood protection.

The project aims to develop a joint methodology for the application of innovative managed aquifer recharge (MAR) technologies, establish a cross-border monitoring system in pilot areas, and prepare a joint action plan for integrated and sustainable transnational water management. InnoWATCCH is implemented by a strong international partnership of water management, research and geological institutions from across the Danube region, promoting coordinated and data-driven solutions to shared water challenges.
