CELEBRATING THE WORLD FISH MIGRATION DAY

May 13, 2022in 2022 0 Likes

One of the main objectives of the EUSDR water quality priority area (EUSDR PA4)  is to facilitate the implementation of the measures included in the Danube River Basin Management Plan. The Hungarian-Slovak-led professional field  for many years placed great emphasis on involving stakeholders of the 14 Danube countries (including the fields of policy, professionals and inhabitants) in professional work and informing them as widely as possible.

World Fish Migration Day takes place on 21 May 2022 at the initiative of the Dutch World Fish Migration Foundation, every second year since 2014. The aim of the global series of events is to raise awareness of the importance of watercourse continuity as well as for the importance of free migration of fish species. One of the consequences of the construction of dams and dams itself is the disruption of river continuity. This can lead to the decrease of the survival of populations of migratory fish species and the declain in the the biodiversity of river water systems.

The EUSDR Water Quality priority area produced an information leaflet in 2021 on proposed measures to protect migratory fish. Next to this the members of the priority area participated in the DTP-MEASURES project – closed in 2021 – , which could help in identifying ecological corridors for sturgeon and other migratory fish species.

The Hungarian event related to World Fish Migration Day will be held in Szigetköz at the Denkpál fish ladder in Dunasziget on May 20, 2022, organized by the University of Széchényi and with the participation of the EUSDR water quality priority area and its Hungarian host Ministry (the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade). The event aims to have an impact on public opinion by presenting the problems, encouraging decision-makers and authorities to take action to protect and restore free-flowing rivers.

In 2018, the messages of the event reached about 200 million people through 580 events organized in nearly 80 countries around the world. If you have time and would like to spend a pleasant day at a lovely arm of the Hungarian Danube section and if you would like to take part at the event please visit the below page where you can find the exact coordinates of the meeting area.
